Christian nationalism and ableism in the United States
Abstract
Abstract Americans with disabilities face significant hurdles across multiple social institutions in the United States. Their inclusion and equitable treatment are frequently contested, even since the passing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. One factor contributing to their ongoing exclusion is ableism—stereotyping or displaying prejudice toward people with disabilities through the assigning of value to their intellectual and physical abilities with a preference toward non-disabled traits. Prior research demonstrates Christian nationalism is an important factor explaining Americans’ discriminatory views toward a variety of marginalized groups. Using a large, national random sample, this analysis reveals that Americans who embrace Christian nationalism are more likely to agree that the situation for people with disabilities is good as it is, disabled people are demanding too much from the rest of society, and there have been enough societal efforts in favor of people with disabilities. However, the strong association between Christian nationalism and ableism is moderated by age, disability status, and the political views of respondents. These findings suggest Christian nationalism will continue to shape the ongoing debates and policy choices concerning the equitable treatment of Americans with disabilities and their inclusion in American civic life.
